We made the train in good time at Penn Station. Ange helped us find it after we'd run around all morning packing, buying a gift for Joe and picking up a new hold-all for the extra stuff we seem to have accumulated (despite really trying not to!!). We stopped only to have breakfast with Ange, who made it all the way over from Queens for about 10am (Go, Ange!!).
The train was big and chrome and looked the part. Ange has a photo of us boarding so when we get it, we'll post it on here. The journey was uneventful, with a few trips to the buffet car for terrible pot noodle affair and a muffin with a list of artificial ingredients longer than my arm. When Nick gets hungry, it doesn't really matter...!
We got to a stop about two away from our final destination and suddenly, a lady disembarking from the train loomed large over Nick, looking slightly worse for wear and holding a half glass of red wine far too loosely for our liking! She saw Nick looking very apprehensive and drawled "Don't worry, honey, I ain't gonna spill it." Nick is not the best in these situations and grinning and nodding was about the best he could do. The lady (Linda, as she introduced herself), was not perturbed and continued to try to engage Nick in conversation! We Brits are not keen on even vaguely 'inimate' small-talk and things went downhill from there...
Apparently, it was her birthday (although that sounds like an alcoholic's excuse if ever there was one!) and she proceeded to ask Nick where he came from. Nick managed to dribble the word 'London' like it was a lemon pip.
Linda repeated her 'birthday' line and continued to loll the glass of wine in her hand. Nick became fixated on the glass. She saw him and said "I ain't gonna spill it ok?".
Why is it when things like this happen, it makes us feel like we're the freak?! In retropsect, Linda was probably attracting more attention than Nick...
We arrived in Providence, Nick minus red wine stains. Thankfully.
Josh and Charlie, picked us up in Josh's brand new car and we did a quick lap of the town. Josh's place is really pretty and all the houses in the area are in the New England style - really nice.
