Our Arrival in San Francisco |

Chris and I arrived in San Fran at about 9:30 this morning. We got a free upgrade on the rental which was cool. Went to Fisherman's Wharf and walked around. Lots of touristy things to see: Alcatraz, The Sea Lions on Pier 39, some U.S. submarine and a whole bunch of gift shops. We ate lunch (I had a shrimp on sourdough) and then walked up to Lombard St. It was a pretty tiring hike.
We then drove around for a bit. We saw the palace of fine arts and the ghiradelli chocolate factory.

In the afternoon we battled traffic for 3.5 hours and headed towards Merced, CA. It took a while but we passed through some pretty cool terrain and saw firefighters battling a brush fire right alongside the highway.

After passing hotels too gross (Chris was all for staying at the $50 a night cesspool until he found out it only had 1 queen sized bed) or too expensive, we settled on the Best Western. More on that later...

We drove into town and got some food and some beer. We saw a street festival and walked around for a bit but we were pretty hungry so we headed back to the room.

The hotel looked pretty nice, but when we finally crawled into bed, Chris found blood on his sheets. Gross! We complained to the night manager and he was completely accusatory. Chris got a little hot headed and was yelling at the guy and took of his shirt to show him that he was not bleeding as the night manager insisted. Needless to say, this did not get the results we desired. No discount, no nothin'. We were given a new set of sheets and a half-hearted apology but it wasn't enough for me to ever consider going to a best western again.

Locations Visited: San Francisco, Merced
