A famous American Dick recently said,
"There are known knowns, unknown knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns."

That got me thinking about travelling and my life of travel.

I guess that known knowns are things like family, friends, home and work. Things that rarely change and upon which we can depend.

Unknown knowns would be unpredictable things that happen in that stable world of friends, family, home and work. A friend or family member becoming sick, a fire in your house or losing your job.

Known unknowns are things outside of that world but for which we are prepared. A holiday, a new job, a new friend, a new house or a first child.

Finally, we are left with the unknown unknowns. That is, situations outiside of our known zone for which we are not prepared.

That is what I went in search of when I left South Africa at the end of June 1995.

A world with no knowns.

What I found, was myself.
