Waitangi Day pub crawl, 2006

Waitangi Day pub crawl |

On the Saturday before Waitangi Day thousands of London based Kiwis descend on central London the for the annual Circle Line pub crawl. Instead of the politics you suffer at home, Waitangi Day in London is actually a celebration of being a New Zealander.

After a communal breakfast to set us up for the day, our first point of call was Gloucester Rd. With thousands participating, it was not so much a pub crawl as a street/road congregation – an opportunity to bump into numerous unexpected faces that you haven’t seen in years. From old schoolmates to ex workmates and ex girlfriends, they were all there!

We were never going to get around the entire line (especially after they closed the line from overcrowding) but proceed to South Kensignton before being demoted to walking via Sloane Square to Westminster Square. Here the crawl cumulated in a haka outside of Parliament at 4pm. A great opportunity to show my UK winter tan!

Of course the festivities continued well into the night – Waitangi Day as it should be!

(The photos don’t do the day’s awesome atmosphere justice.)
