Malta 2006

Jenny and I were picked up at 5am from our accomodation to catch a ferry to Sicily today. It took us 90 minutes to travel from Malta to Sicily. On arrival at Pozzallo, we got on a tour bus which would be taking us around part of the island. We departed Pozzallo and headed to Taormina, which was 2 and half hours north along the coastline. Taormina is built 206 metres above sea level, with very narrow roads. Our double decker coach was not allowed up, so we had to catch the local shuttle bus. The village has many cafes, resturants and small shops. At the very top of the mountain there is a small church. After lunch we headed to Mt Etna, which is still an active volcano. It had been erupting for the previous 10 days, but fortunately not today. We were able to walk around the base, but didn't go onto any of the craters that were there. Sicily is a very fertile island with vast groves of orange, lemon, olive and almond trees and grape vines. Along the roads there were eucalypts trees, which had been introduced to Sicily to help decrease the spread of malaria, but unfortunately it didn't work, but the trees can still be found all around the island. We caught the ferry back to Malta at 9:30pm, and then finally arrived back at the hotel at about midnight, it had been a very long day.
