The start of our adventure - Singapore, Dubai, London

On our way from Christchurch |

Welcome to the record of our adventures overseas. Stupidly, we didn't start this record immediately we left home so the first part of this is being done on memory.

Getting to the plane was an achievement in its self - we had been manic trying to get ourselves organised.... I think we bit off more than we could chew... being made redundant, renovating a house, moving out of our house and getting tenants in, packing up our lives into two 20kg bags and then getting on a plane all within 4 months.

We got to the plane but my parents nearly didn't. We were being called to get on it and meanwhile I was on the phone to them trying to establishment which bit of Memorial Avenue they were on (it's about 4km long). Finally, they arrived in enough time for me to give them the world's fastest goodbye hug before we were too late to actually get on the plane.

Next stop, two days with my sister and her family in Auckland. It was the first day's relaxation that we'd had in a very long time so it was nice to just chill with them.

We arrived in Singapore to the usual heatwave. We had two days looking around and window shopping, wishing we had lots of money to do more than just window shopping. Nevertheless, we had a very enjoyable time and saw everything that was on the list. We stayed in a great hotel called the Albert Court. We slept like logs. As you can see from the photo's we went to a wildlife place where Si was first in line to hold the scorpians. I took the photos only for that one.

After two days, we headed off to Dubai. We were flying Emeriates all the way and were disappointed to see we had picked up the same crew we'd had on the first leg. They were either all sick or awfully hungover from NZ to Singapore, so we had to hope they were better for this part of the trip. We arrived in Dubai early in the morning so thought we would have a couple of hours sleep before heading out sightseeing for the day. We must have been jetlagged as we both slept though the alarms and slept for 4 hours instead of 2. However, we went out and got our bearings before I faded again at about 5.30pm and crashed without having any dinner etc. We had recovered by the next day though and had a wonderful time cruising down the the Dubai creek on an Abra. We then spent the night with an adventure company going out to the desert.... what fun. Loved every minute of it and highly recommend it.

Overall, I would go back as I ran out of time to do the markets justice (souqs) and would have loved to have spent more time in them. Next time I would also spend a bit of extra money on the accommodation. We stayed in the cheapest of the emeriates stopover packages and it was tired and grotty. The basin leaked onto the floor, and didn't have a plug and in general the room was grotty. The only good thing was that we had a double bed each which was great when feeling so jetlagged.

Locations Visited: Christchurch, Auckland, Singapore City, Dubai, London
