Messing About on the River, Vientiane and Vang Vieng |

While the Laos National Museum in Vientiane is full of black and white photographs depicting the 'French colonialists deceiving the Lao people into false independence and barbarous slavery' at least they gave them one thing - fantastic bakeries serving fresh coffee and mouth-watering pastries!

Moving on from Vientiane, Vang Vieng was the next stop, a surreal backpackers' playground. Hundreds of tourists float gently down the river on rubber tubes, drifting casually between the bars which line the banks of the river, bottles of 'Beer Lao' clutched in wet hands. The kayaking was good, with plenty of stops to tube through caves, aerial-slide into the water and generally mess about on the river along with everyone else. Not much culture, but a whole lot of fun!
