Travelling in the Far East

Macao, China |

From Hong Kong we travelled to the Portuguese colony of Macao. After leaving the busy harbour, we passed between many islands. On reaching the open sea, the rain began again and lasted all day. At least it was warm, so one didn’t really mind being wet. The town of Macao was only about 4 miles square. Most of the architecture was Old Portuguese style. The buildings looked old and dirty, but by law they were white-washed every 3 years – the “dirt” was due to the humidity and rain!

We explored a little, then went to the Casino, which was in a large modern hotel complete with shops and restaurants. This open-plan three-storied gambling joint had all the forms of taking people’s money that they could wish for. We watched for a while, then tried our luck with the one-armed bandits to no avail. Then home in preparation for tomorrow’s trip to Taiwan.
