LA, August 2005
LA was excellent. I stayed with Tim Molloy at his house in Hermosa Beach.
The weather was perfect – cloudless skies and summer temperatures. Within a few hours of my arrival I felt right at home sitting outside one the local bars amongst the palm trees, sun, beach, Tim’s flatmates and friends and…happy hour. Tim’s place is 50m from the beach, and a 5 minute walk along the boulevard to ‘the Pier’ – the bar/restaurant area.
The next few days comprised of a lot of time spent at the Pier, swimming, and of course sightseeing. No surf.
Highlights included: visiting West Coast Choppers and Hooters in Long Beach; the AVP (American Volleyball) women’s finals at Manhattan Beach (a 10 minute cycle along the boulevard); shooting pistols at the local shooting range; Tim’s flatmate providing a tour of Hollywood, Rodeo Dr, Beverly Hills, the Playboy mansion (well, the gates) and various other iconic sites such as the Viper Room. I also spent a day with Richard and Carolyn at Six Flags Magic Mountain – a roller coaster park: http://www.sixflags.com/parks/magicmountain/Rides/index.html (X, Deja Vu and Goliath were particular favourites).
I could get very used to the California casual lifestyle – the permanent summer, the beach, and the nightlife.
