Me & My 20 Kilo Backpack in South America 2006

Angra Dos Reis & Ilha Grande (Abraao), BRAZIL |

26/01/2006
This morning Tom and I woke up at 8 to get ready for our trip to Ilha Grande. Ilha Grande is an asland off the coast about 150km west of Rio de Janeiro. it is almost all tropical beaches and Atlantic rain forest. We got a coach to Angra dos Reis which took about 3hrs then a boat. the boat trip took about 2hrs and Tom and i just chilled at the back of the boat. The views were mint and even tho it was really hot the spray from the ocean kept you lovely and cool.
Eventually after finding some accomidation in a dodgey but cheapish Hostel, we later found out the it was peak season and most of the places were already booked. We found a nice little bar after walking along one of the beaches and planned the next days travels.

The plan today we set out to Ilha Grande´s finest beach, Praia Lopez Mendez. To get to Lopez Mendez we had to follow a trail through the steamy forests on the island. The hike took about two and a half hours but was well worth it. The beach was virtually empty when we arrived and the view was amazing. We spent the whole day swimming and body boarding. The hike back wasn´t so fun, as it started to pour with rain just as we started to leave. A little rock pool that we had walked through on the way there, turned into metre deep rapids on the way back as the rain got heavier. When we eventually made it back we were soaked through plus i was covered in mud as i took a bit of a tumble on the way down.
Later that night after we had dried off and the power came back on inour dodgy Hostel, we found a lovely place to eat, here we had chicken, shrimps and beef with rice and potatoes.

After speaking to some other backpackers staying in the hostel, we were advised to head to the west of the island. So we set off for another day of hiking. On they was we found a lovely rock pool which we decided would be a great place to have a swim. We then headed off to the beaches, they we a lot smaller and the waves weren´t so big. On the way back we came across this sogn that said fresh fish dinner for 6 reals (1.50p) so we stopped of there and had the best meal of the holiday so far.

Locations Visited: Angra dos Reis, Abraao, Angra dos Reis
