Wedding & the North East

The Wall and Beyond |

Tuesday started with a swim once more, before we departed for even more Northerly climes. Our next port of call was Alnwick (pronounced "anik"), but we decided to take something of a detour and see Hadrian's Wall en route.

Because we had a long way to travel we didn't go too far along the wall, but we saw Chester's Fort at Chollerford and a Mithras temple nearby. The fort was very well preserved, and on a lovely site by the river. The Temple was reached through a field of inquisitive cows, and was 1/2 underwater, having been built in a bog! Both were well worth seeing, and luckily the weather was much improved on the day before!

We reached Alnwick and checked into our hotel - the Oak's - but weren't terribly impressed. A quick walk to the Tourist Info office in Alnwick (which is a lovely town) found us a B&B called "Beaches" in Alnmouth (pronounced "Alan-mouth". Northerners clearly don't believe in consistency...) a mere 4 miles up the road, which we duly booked into. And we were very glad we did! The rooms were lovely - spatious and comfortable - the food was extraordinarily good, and Donald and Suzan, who ran it, were very friendly and helpful. Also, they both have and allow dogs. We can't recommend them enough! (http://www.beachesbyo.co.uk/) Our first evening we had a very tasty meal with them, which was to set the standard for the rest of the holiday.

Locations Visited: Durham, Chollerford, Alnwick, Alnmouth
