Melnik |

Melnik is a fab place and we were really lucky with both the weather and our hotel. As our stay was totally unplanned, I retired from the evening's festivities early to speak to the hotel receptionist about booking transport to Rozhen Monastery, followed by a trip to a vineyard. The hotel came up trumps, arranging a trip with Melnik's best, albeit craziest driver.

After visiting the peaceful and scenic monastery at Rozhen, our driver took us to Demanitza Vineyard, but due to a mix-up we weren't allowed in 'no problem my friends' said he as he whisked us to a friend in Melnik who organised a wine-tasing in the Boyar house, Bulgaria's oldest residential dwelling, with a labyrinth of wine cellars beneath. Once inside, he even swept away the rope curtain and took a photo of us sitting on the furniture!

The following day he'd also arranged for a proper vineyard tour of the local Chateau, impressively located on a hill outside Melnik. We had a splendid time sampling 9 local wines, with some of the best local food we'd eaten on the trip...the only downside was that it was at 10in the morning!!!

Our driver then took us all the way to Sofia, dropping us outside our hostel, all for a trifle more than the bus would've cost!
