22/23 December |

Tues. 23 Dec. A lazy day. Walked through scotch mist along the canals with Vaughn for breakfast at The Bakery at 10 a.m. Calan came later. We all went to “The Messiah” Oratorio at St. Martin’s-in-the-Field in the evening. Quite disappointing, as we were in the gallery and couldn’t see. And it is pretty highbrow for just listening. So we left at interval (some inadvertently and the others had just had enough) and went to Haagendaz. A different atmosphere and clientele from the morning – noisy and smoky. Des quite feverish, but still smiling.

Wed. 24 Dec. Cloudy, but O.K. Went into town by bus to buy Tammy’s gifts for Vaughn – books on design, etc. for “Lord of the Rings”. Found Shaftesbury Avenue and Forbidden Planet bookstore – way out, weird and not-so-wonderful .Also went to Borders bookshop – like a library, with different subjects on different floors. Then by bus (No. 29) to Camden. Called in at Sainsbury’s for last minute Christmas groceries (oh for some good old South African plonk) then home. Murray there.
All left at 1.30 by bus to Angel, Islington and met Calan and Rachel.
Sadlers Wells theatre a modern building. We were in the gods on 2nd. floor level. Nice high seats, with very little leg-room. Saw a modern version of Tchaikovsy’s Nutcracker Suite – “The Nutcracker”. Very good.
we love stage shows, and this one was vibrantly different.. Bus back to Camden (dark already), thence to The Brewing Company pub with fires in two fireplaces. Then walked to Osmani’s, a Moroccan restaurant. Different food! Tasted couscous for the first time. Not wonderful. Then home at 8.30.
