No study visit to Turkey would be complete without a visit to Troy and its wooden horse(s now that Brad Pitt’s mighty beast is perched on the seashore at Cannakale). High point for Ms Croft was seeing Schliemann’s trenches (whatever one may think of his archaeological techniques, he is something of a legend himself).

The site itself is more than the pile of stones the guidebooks lead you to expect and with the best labelling of any site I visited in Turkey. The guide livened up the visit, but was rather too credulous of the Trojan War stories (the archaeologist/historian tut-tuts in the background...) Cannakale is horrible - only worth an overnight stay to see the site, and Gallipoli of course.
