Wedding & the North East

Alnwick |

Our last full day in the North we decided to head back into Alnwick to see the castle and the new gardens. We were very impressed to find a giant treehouse which was part of the gardens, so we went there first. It was a bit more like a tree mansion than a tree house, and gave us some crazy ideas about great places to live...

Having explored the tree house we made our way up to the castle. It is also very well preserved, and still a family home, but you can see quite a lot of it inside and out, and it has some fabulous views out over the valley through which the river Aln runs.

After a look around the castle we headed back to the tree house to have lunch in their resaurant, which was lovely. Then we went to explore the rest of the gardens, which are really very exciting. They have a "poison garden" full of poisonous plants, which you're only allowed into on a guided tour, a huge water cascade which does exciting things on the hour, a beautiful formal garden, a bamboo maze, and a garden with lots of different, exciting "interactive" (meaning you can get wet!) water features.

We followed our walk around the gardens with afternoon tea, once more back at the tree house. Then we went on a woodland walk which took us down to the river, before heading back to Alnmouth once more. Our final evening there we again had dinner in our B&B. At special request (because Jon told them I love it) they had acquired some vennison steak which was fabulous. We finished the day with another walk along the lovely beach.

Locations Visited: Alnwick, Alnmouth
